Some Things Are Worth Persevering For
There are moments in life when quitting feels easier.
When prayers seem unanswered.
When faith feels dry.
When the pressure keeps building.
When the pain keeps lingering.
When the road feels longer than expected.
The reality is we live in a culture wired for quitting. If something stops working quickly, we move on. Subscriptions get canceled. Commitments fade. Relationships get ghosted. We are constantly told that if something becomes difficult, we should walk away from it.
But Hebrews 10 gives believers a different message:
Do not give up. Press on.
The writer of Hebrews was speaking to Christians who were facing real pressure and persecution. Following Jesus was costing them something. They were being pushed to walk away from their faith. Yet in the middle of all that tension, Hebrews reminds them and reminds us that Jesus is worth persevering for.
We Persevere Because of Who We Have Access To
One of the most powerful truths in Hebrews 10 is that because of Jesus, we now have direct access to God.
Before Jesus, access to God was limited. Only the high priest could enter the Holy of Holies, and only under strict conditions. But Jesus became the perfect sacrifice once and for all. The barrier was removed. The curtain was torn.
Now we are invited into the presence of God.
That changes everything.
When life gets hard, the answer is not to drift away from God. The answer is to draw near to Him. Hebrews 10 repeatedly calls believers to stay close to God because our strength is found in His presence, not in ourselves.
Many people slowly walk away from their faith not because God abandoned them, but because they stopped approaching Him.
When life becomes overwhelming, it is tempting to isolate ourselves spiritually. But the moments we feel weakest are often the moments we need to draw nearest to God.
We do not persevere because we are strong enough.
We persevere because Jesus gave us access to the One who is.
We Persevere by Holding On to Hope
Hebrews 10 says:
“For He who promised is faithful.”
That is the foundation of perseverance.
Our confidence is not built on our consistency. It is built on God’s faithfulness.
There are seasons when we feel exhausted spiritually. Seasons where we feel discouraged, frustrated, or emotionally drained. Yet God remains faithful even when we feel weak.
The writer of Hebrews also reminds believers that perseverance was never meant to happen alone.
We need people around us who encourage us.
People who stir us up toward love and good works.
People who remind us why we started the race in the first place.
Church community matters because isolation becomes a breeding ground for quitting.
Sometimes you are the one encouraging others.
Sometimes you are the one who needs encouragement.
That is how the body of Christ works. God uses imperfect people to strengthen one another through difficult seasons.
Some of the greatest breakthrough moments in life happen because God places the right people around us at the right time.
We Persevere Because the Reward Is Greater Than the Cost
Following Jesus will cost something.
It may cost comfort.
It may cost convenience.
It may cost popularity.
It may cost opportunities.
It may even cost relationships.
But walking away from Jesus costs far more.
Hebrews 10 reminds believers to remember what God has already brought them through. The same God who carried them in the past would continue carrying them forward.
Sometimes we need to stop and remember:
God has been faithful before.
God has sustained us before.
God has brought us through difficult seasons before.
And He is not finished now.
The writer of Hebrews says:
“We are not those who shrink back.”
That is identity language.
As followers of Jesus, we endure. We persevere. We continue forward because our hope is not tied to our current hardship. Our hope is tied to what is still ahead.
Don’t Quit
Maybe right now you are in a season where quitting feels easier.
Maybe your faith feels tired.
Maybe the pressure feels heavy.
Maybe you feel disconnected or discouraged.
Hebrews 10 gives a clear challenge:
Draw near even when you do not feel it.
Hold fast even when it is hard.
Stay connected even when it is inconvenient.
Endure even when it costs you something.
Some things are worth persevering for.
Jesus is at the top of that list.
At the finish line there is purpose, freedom, joy, and eternity with Christ. But if we quit the race too early, we never see what God was doing through the struggle.
So keep going.
Do not shrink back.
Do not give up.
It is worth it.
