Prayer and Fasting
In a world where we often rush from one thing to the next, it’s easy to miss the presence of God. But in Acts 13, we’re reminded that the early church paused to pray and fast—and it was in that sacred stillness that God moved in power. He called out Barnabas and Saul for the work He had prepared, launching a movement that would shape the future of the Church.
Prayer and fasting aren’t just spiritual extras—they’re biblical essentials. Fasting doesn’t manipulate God into giving us what we want. It realigns our hearts, reorients our desires, and reawakens us to His presence. It's not about bending God to our will—it's about bending our will toward His.
From Performance to Posture (Isaiah 58:1–5)
God isn’t interested in religious performance. Through Isaiah, He rebukes His people for empty rituals done for show. They fasted but remained self-centered, oppressive, and argumentative. God makes it clear: true fasting isn’t about appearances—it’s about humility, repentance, and surrender.
The Fast God Desires (Isaiah 58:6–7)
God desires a fast that loosens chains, sets the oppressed free, and meets the needs of others. It’s practical. It’s powerful. When we fast, our focus shifts outward—toward justice, compassion, and kingdom purpose.
The Results of Obedience (Isaiah 58:8–12)
When we fast with the right heart, Isaiah says our “light breaks forth like the dawn.” Healing, guidance, strength, and spiritual renewal follow. Fasting isn't just about asking for things—it's about becoming someone fully surrendered to God’s will.
Rest and Realignment (Isaiah 58:13–14)
The Sabbath is another spiritual rhythm many neglect. Honoring it isn't just about rest—it's about trust. When we give one day back to God, we’re reminded that He is our source, our sustainer, and our strength.
So What Now?
Prayer and fasting are about creating space—space for God to speak, move, heal, and lead. What strongholds are you battling? What breakthrough are you waiting on? What spiritual dryness are you walking through?
Maybe it’s time to fast. To step back. To slow down. To stop striving and start surrendering.
The early church fasted—and God sent. Isaiah fasted—and God spoke. What could God do in your life if you created the space?
