To The Churches of Pergamum and Thyatira
The letters to Pergamum and Thyatira remind us of the constant tension between faithfulness and compromise. Both churches lived in environments where following Jesus was costly, and both were praised for their strengths while warned about their weaknesses.
Pergamum: Holding Fast in the Shadow of Idols
Pergamum was the provincial capital of Asia Minor, a hub of emperor worship, and home to massive pagan temples, including the altar of Zeus and the serpent-god Asclepius. Jesus even called it “where Satan’s throne is.” Yet He commended the church for holding fast to His name, even when Antipas, a faithful witness, was killed for his faith.
But Pergamum also tolerated false teaching, allowing some to embrace idolatry and immorality. Christ’s warning was direct: repent, or face His judgment. His promise to the faithful was far greater: hidden manna and a new name, symbols of eternal life and victory in Him.
Thyatira: Service Without Compromise
Thyatira was known for its trade guilds, where participation often meant pagan feasts and idol worship. The church was praised for its love, service, faith, and endurance, even growing stronger over time. Yet Jesus rebuked them for tolerating a false prophetess, Jezebel, who was leading believers into sin. To those who resisted, His command was clear: “Hold fast until I come.” For those who overcome, He promised authority and the gift of the morning star.
The Call for Us Today
Both churches faced the same challenge we do: the temptation to compromise truth for comfort, peace, or acceptance. But Jesus calls His people to live faithfully, even when the cost is high. The world may grow darker, but the Gospel always shines brighter through a church that clings to truth and holiness.
