The Rich Young Ruler

This week, we explored one of the most relatable and challenging stories in Scripture—the story of the rich young ruler. A man who had everything—wealth, status, morality—yet still knew something was missing. He came to Jesus asking, “What must I do to inherit eternal life?” and walked away sorrowful when Jesus asked him to give it all up and follow Him.
We may not all be rich rulers, but we’re all holding onto something—comfort, control, fear, possessions, relationships, sin—that keeps us from going all in with Jesus.

Like the fear of letting go in the deep end of the pool, we often reach for what’s familiar instead of trusting the One who says, “I’ve got you.”

This message led us through three essential responses to Jesus' call:

  1. Humbly Seek After Jesus
We don’t earn salvation by doing good things—we come with empty hands and humble hearts, admitting our need for Him.
  2. Completely Surrender to Jesus
Jesus isn’t after your stuff—He’s after your heart. What you’re unwilling to let go of may be the very thing standing between you and true freedom.
  3. Trust Solely in Jesus
Eternal life isn’t something we achieve—it’s a gift. With man it is impossible, but with God all things are possible.

Challenge Question: So what’s holding you back?

Don’t walk away from Jesus like the rich young ruler did. Lay it down—whatever it is—and follow Him. You won’t regret it.
