Called to Serve

Today is a special day at Emmaus Church—we’re calling it Serve Sunday. At first glance, you might think this is simply about volunteering, but it’s much deeper than that. Serve Sunday is really Reflection Sunday—a reflection of Jesus Himself.

In Mark 10:45, Jesus tells us, “The Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give His life as a ransom for many.” True greatness in God’s Kingdom isn’t about titles, recognition, or power—it’s about serving. James and John once argued about who should sit closest to Jesus in heaven. But Jesus reminded them that greatness isn’t measured by status—it’s measured by sacrifice.

When we serve, we’re following in the footsteps of Jesus. And often, it’s the people who serve behind the scenes—the ones whose names may never be known—that leave the greatest impact. Their quiet faithfulness shapes lives for eternity.

For me, the word greatness could be synonymous with world changer. I think of people like my middle school leader, Kristen Murray, who believed in me and gave me my first opportunity to serve. She didn’t know at the time the impact she was making—but it helped shape my calling today. That’s what service does. It changes lives, often in ways we won’t see until years later.

At Emmaus, over 50 people serve every month—through setup and teardown, NextGen ministries, worship, media, first impressions, small groups, and so much more. Without them, this church would not exist as it does today. Their service is building a legacy, not just for our church, but for the Kingdom of God.

So here’s the challenge: if you want your life to matter, if you want to leave a legacy that lasts, lean into the call of Jesus. Serve faithfully. Serve joyfully. Serve in ways that may never be recognized on earth but are celebrated in heaven.

Because the greatest among us are the ones who serve.
