Miracles; wk. 2 "The Boy With The Unclean Spirit"
The Boy With The Unclean Spirit
Not every season of faith feels strong.
Some seasons feel shaky.
Uncertain.
Barely holding together.
Mark 9 reminds us of something powerful:
Jesus doesn’t require perfect faith. He responds to honest faith.
1. Desperation Often Leads Us to Jesus
This father didn’t come to Jesus with confidence.
He came because nothing else worked.
He was desperate.
Truth:
Desperation is not the enemy of faith. It is often the doorway.
2. Honest Faith Moves the Heart of Jesus
This father prays one of the most real prayers in Scripture:
This is the tension we all live in:
He doesn’t:
Truth:
Jesus responds to honest faith, not perfect faith.
3. You Don’t Have to Pretend with God
The father didn’t clean things up before coming to Jesus.
He didn’t:
Truth:
A little honest faith is more powerful than a lot of fake faith.
Growth doesn’t come from pretending.
It comes from honesty.
Ask yourself:
4. Jesus Steps Into the Mess
Jesus walks straight into chaos:
He moves right in the middle of it.
Truth:
Jesus is not waiting for your life to be cleaned up.
He meets you in the mess.
5. God’s Power Creates a Ripple Effect
Jesus heals the boy, but it doesn’t stop there.
The miracle impacts:
God’s work in your life never stops with you.
It spreads.
It teaches.
It transforms others.
6. The Real Issue Is Dependence
The disciples ask:
“Why couldn’t we do it?”
Jesus answers:
The problem wasn’t ability.
It was dependence.
They had started relying on:
Breakthrough comes from dependence on Jesus, not activity for Jesus.
Ask yourself:
7. Fragile Faith Is Still Faith
This is the heart of the passage.
You don’t need:
Even if it feels small.
Even if it feels weak.
Truth:
Jesus responds to both:
Final Reflection
Maybe your faith feels strong right now.
Or maybe it feels fragile.
Either way, Jesus is not looking for perfection.
He is looking for honesty.
So maybe your prayer today is simple:
“I believe… help my unbelief.”
And that is enough.
“Teacher, I brought my son to you…”
- The disciples couldn’t help
- His son was still suffering
- Time felt like it was running out
He was desperate.
Truth:
Desperation is not the enemy of faith. It is often the doorway.
- When your strength runs out
- When your solutions fail
- When control disappears
2. Honest Faith Moves the Heart of Jesus
This father prays one of the most real prayers in Scripture:
“I believe; help my unbelief.”
This is the tension we all live in:
- Belief and doubt
- Hope and fear
- Faith and uncertainty
He doesn’t:
- Shame him
- Correct him
- Tell him to come back stronger
Truth:
Jesus responds to honest faith, not perfect faith.
3. You Don’t Have to Pretend with God
The father didn’t clean things up before coming to Jesus.
He didn’t:
- Hide his doubt
- Fake confidence
- Try to look strong
Truth:
A little honest faith is more powerful than a lot of fake faith.
Growth doesn’t come from pretending.
It comes from honesty.
Ask yourself:
- Where am I really with God right now?
- Am I being honest with Him?
4. Jesus Steps Into the Mess
Jesus walks straight into chaos:
- A desperate crowd
- Arguing leaders
- A suffering child
- A broken father
He moves right in the middle of it.
Truth:
Jesus is not waiting for your life to be cleaned up.
He meets you in the mess.
5. God’s Power Creates a Ripple Effect
Jesus heals the boy, but it doesn’t stop there.
The miracle impacts:
- The son — restored and set free
- The father — faith strengthened
- The disciples — challenged and corrected
God’s work in your life never stops with you.
It spreads.
It teaches.
It transforms others.
6. The Real Issue Is Dependence
The disciples ask:
“Why couldn’t we do it?”
Jesus answers:
“This kind cannot be driven out by anything but prayer.”
The problem wasn’t ability.
It was dependence.
They had started relying on:
- Past success
- Routine
- Their own strength
Breakthrough comes from dependence on Jesus, not activity for Jesus.
Ask yourself:
- Am I relying on God… or just going through the motions?
7. Fragile Faith Is Still Faith
This is the heart of the passage.
You don’t need:
- Big faith
- Perfect faith
- Impressive faith
Even if it feels small.
Even if it feels weak.
Truth:
Jesus responds to both:
- Faith that breaks through the roof
- Faith that barely holds together
Final Reflection
Maybe your faith feels strong right now.
Or maybe it feels fragile.
Either way, Jesus is not looking for perfection.
He is looking for honesty.
So maybe your prayer today is simple:
“I believe… help my unbelief.”
And that is enough.
